Mustangs announce postseason awards

The Marble Falls High School football celebrated the accomplishments of the 2021 season with its annual banquet Feb. 28.

Head coach Brian Herman had scheduled the event for earlier in the semester, but weather forced a date change. Herman and coaches weren’t in a hurry to have this event since it is the last gathering to commemorate a Mustangs team that reached the third round of the playoffs, a first for this century.

He had released the all-District 14-5A Division II teams around the holidays but doesn’t release the Mustang team awards until the night of the banquet. Those awards are on voted on by the coaching staff.

The team’s Offensive Most Valuable Player is senior quarterback Jake Becker, and the Defensive Most Valuable Player is senior defensive back Ryan Minor. The Most Valuable Teammate is senior center Hudson McBryde, and the co-Fighting Heart recipients are senior lineman Laron Earls and senior defensive back Chris Whitecotton.

Herman noted choosing the recipients wasn’t easy.

“There was plenty of back and forth,” he said. “I’m not a fan of and I don’t like that everyone gets a trophy. We felt like these players truly represented our program the right way.”

He added that coaches were truly torn between Earls and Whitecotton, which is why they decided to award both.

“I think those five young men represent the team the best,” Herman said. “Other candidates were clearly considered in all those categories. We had some really good football players.”
